Egg baskets can be used to make the egg gathering process easier and as a beautiful country decoration. However, it is not a good idea to store your eggs in egg baskets and definitely do not leave your fresh eggs sitting in an egg basket on your counter for days because they can become contaminated with salmonella which can make you or your family very ill.
For decorative egg baskets you can use fake eggs that look just like real eggs.
To prevent salmonella you should store your hen eggs in a refrigerator at 40 degrees F or below. "Fresh eggs, even those with clean, uncracked shells, may contain bacteria called Salmonella that can cause foodborne illness, often called “food poisoning.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimates that 79,000 cases of foodborne illness and 30 deaths each year are caused by eating eggs contaminated with Salmonella" (FDA,2019). (See more about Salmonella)
