Here you will find detailed information about various bantam breeds, such as coloring, egg laying, personality, characteristics and show birds. Many Bantam Breeds are miniature versions of standard breeds. They are usually one fifth of the size of their standard sized counterparts. Pekin Bantams are considered as true breed Bantams because they have no standard size counterpart. Pekin Bantams are referred to as a British Breed though they were brought to Britain from China in the 19th century and some sources say they were brought as early as 1835 when "a consignment of birds were given to Queen Victoria" (1). Pekin Bantams are known as one of the oldest recognized chicken breeds. In a journal kept by Marco Polo he described these delightful birds. Even though many breeds of Bantams have been around for centuries; some bantams are specifically bred down by breeders to maintain the characteristics and looks of their larger counterparts. Most Pekin Bantams have sweet docile personalities though roosters can get protective over theirnhens and hens usually go broody easily. They are excellent scavenger's and tend to be healthier and heartier than the larger breeds, although the hen eggs are much smaller in size. If you are looking for a "pet chicken" Bantam is an excellent choice. Bantams have smart, sweet personalities and bond quickly with their owners which make's them great pets to have.
