The mottled bantam is beautiful with a gentle nature. They are much smaller than the standard breeds which means it takes less room to house them.
Origin: Mottled Bantams are said to have first appeared in England in the 1860's brought by soldiers returning from China.
Appearance: Mottled bantams come in many different colors, they have feathered shanks and toes on very short legs.

Personality: Gentle and sweet, do not mind being handled, and make great pets.
They are very gentle, excellent setters, require little space, and with their many color varieties are absolutely beautiful to look at. Cochins are the most popular of the feather legged bantams and one of our best setters. Cochins have a lustrous, greenish black base color with many of the feathers tipped in white - a color contrast that really makes them stand out in a flock (1).

According to Henderson's Breed Chart Mottled Japanese Bantams "Developed in Japan as early as the 7th century perhaps from Indo-Chinese stock. First introduced to Europe in 1860. Truest bred carry a "lethal gene" which is also connected to the shortened leg characteristic" (3).
