ForRest-Fox 4's Legacy Sister
Beloved ForRest
I decided that I did not want any more baby chicks after the demise of my little Fox 4 chick until I knew how to care for them properly. The day after Fox 4 was buried, Creamy hatched an egg! The chick had a faded looking 4 on her head and looked just like Fox 4! Creamy attacked it and of course, I rescued her.
I named her ForRest, in honor of her older brother. It was not long and ForRest started doing the same tricks that Fox 4 did! I cherished her right away.
By the time she started laying eggs, her personality became her own.
I made her sleep in a cage with a hot water bottle and feathers that I found in the hen house and yard. I put a wash cloth over top of her and covered the cage with a towel. We got a sound maker that made sounds like crickets and put it next to her cage. Her small cage was right next to my bed. A space heater was close by. If she got uncovered during the night she would peep for me. I would wake up and cover her back up.
Update: ForRest gets caught smoking and drinking coffee!
That's right! ForRest left to her own devices. Grabbed a pouch of tobacco and ate much of the contents. Ever since then anyone who has a cigarette is not safe from ForRest she will snatch it right out of their mouth!
To our surprise she started drinking coffee. If anyone sets their cup down ForRest will sneak over an get a drink or two!
Update:ForRest loves Pepsi!
No Pepsi is safe around her! She will start drinking any uncovered Pepsi. We tried to see if she would drink other kinds of soda pop but she would not take them!

ForRest loves to play climb the ladder on my fingers. She plays dead to the amazement of friends and neighbors. ForRest will pick a colored square on the floor when I call out the color. She loves to eat hot-dogs.

ForRest thinks she is a star. She rides to the store in a baby stroller and loves to do all her little tricks for audiences with nothing more than kisses for a reward. (It is almost impossible to get her to do tricks for food because she will only concentrate on the food!) She has started her first molt. It has been hard on her.
Update: ForRest is now grown:
(1 year old),and lays the nicest brown eggs for me everyday. She is sweet and will hop up in my lap and chirp to get petted. She does not do as many tricks. After she started laying her eggs I guess she thinks, that laying an egg everyday, is a great enough trick for her. I always tell her, "Pretty ForRest, Happy ForRest" and she looks at me with love in her eyes..and I think of her brother..she was named after and how sweet she is, how much I loved her brother and how much I love her!

ForRest still has not gone broody. She does not do as many tricks on her own any more but will if we ask her to. ForRest tucked an egg in Creamy's nest. Creamy has gone broody and I suspect she will hatch ForRest's chick but I will have to watch closely as Creamy my white leghorn hen has been known to attach baby chicks that she hatches. Somehow she seems to know that they are not hers.

ForRest is a mother. Creamy has hatched her chick. We named her Biscuit. Creamy raised the tiny chick for a month and one day she brought the chick to me, waited until ForRest was sitting on my lap and chirped to Biscuit. Biscuit jumped on my lap and crawled under ForRest. Creamy went outside and wanted nothing more to do with Baby Biscuit.

ForRest loves to watch television. Charlotte's web is her favorite movie. When the movie ends she gets upset, squawks and pecks at the television. lol!

ForRest hangs out with my hen named Biscuit all the time when she looks for Biscuit she calls out "titter, tiiiiiiiiitttttttteeeeeerrrrr" and Biscuit will come running. I think this is because I always call Biscuit "sister"

Tribute to ForRest
Chicken Heaven on Earth's Legacy sister of Fox 4 chicken passed away peacefully in Motherhen's arms. She will be deeply missed. We love her and miss her. She was so smart and talented that she attracted attention everywhere we went. She passed Jan. 12, 2010. Forest lived longer than many chickens do.She lived to a ripe old age of five.
