The Lakenvelder is a Heritage Breed and was registered as a rare breed by the Rare Poultry Society in 1939. They are said to be of German origin, first appearing in the early 1830's in Westfalen and Northern regions of Rhine province. The name Lakenvelder means" field of linen' or 'shadow on a sheet' but it is actually the name of the black and white colour patten" (1).
They do not like to be handled to much but learn quickly. The roosters are very protective over their flock.

Roosters weight-Between 5 and 6 lbs.
Hens weight- Between 4-5 lbs
Hens are good layers and will go broody if you do not bother their eggs and if they do not sense any nearby danger.
Eggs are medium sized (11/2"-2")usually white or tinted
This breed can be found in large, standard size and bantam sizes.

Leg color: Blue
Excellent birds for show.
