Dirty water is one of the main causes of chicken illness. Chickens need fresh clean water at all times. Dirty water will breed unwanted bacteria and insects, and can cause your birds to get sick with Coccidiosis, other sickness, and can even cause death to your chickens. Clean water container's regularly or wipe out your poultry water cups every day or every few days to prevent sickness and the spread of disease. Usually all that is needed is a good scrubber or sponge and hot water to clean it. The container's should get an extra cleaning once or twice a week with a mild dish soap and rinsed well. Dry the container in the sun to reduce bacteria. If no sun is available dry with a cotton lint free towel. After container is totally dry you can refill it. It is a good idea to have a second water container so while one is being cleaned and sun dried, the other one will be in use. Make sure wild birds do not have access to your chickens water because wild birds carry diseases which your birds can catch such as Avian pox and Avian Influenza.
UPDATE: Easiest Way to Water Your Chickens and Keep Water Clean
The easiest way I have found to water your chickens is with poultry water cups which have an automatic float to refill the cups. Your chickens won't have to peck at anything to fill the water cups and won't have to learn how to use them. The water cups refill automatically.
They can be attached to any kind of plastic bucket with a lid. I set up a simple system by attaching them to 2 gallon, 5 gallon and 55 gallon barrels or pvc lines.
Vacuum seals can prevent water cups from refilling. You can easily prevent vacuum seal in poultry water cups by drilling or poking a few tiny holes in the lid.
Keep water cool in the summer by freezing plastic bottles full of water and placing them in the bucket or barrel.
Always be sure that water containers or pvc water lines are not placed in direct sunlight as this can heat the water and cause bacteria to form.
All I have to do is clean the cups out every few days and refill the buckets when they get low. My chickens water stays clean and fresh longer and my work load is so much easier now!
