Heritage breed chickens sometimes referred to as Heirloom chickens are standard breeds of chickens which we're proclaimed as established breeds by the APA in the mid-20th century. Many of these "pure blood" chicken breeds are on the endangered species list and watch list, due to public interest in hybrid and genetically altered chickens.
​Many of the old timer's who generated public interest in the Heritage Breeds have passed on and only a few reputable breeders have maintained the bloodline of these chicken breeds.
​A Heritage chicken is any standard breed of chicken accepted by the American Poultry Association which established the breed prior to the mid 20th century. Heritage breed chicks are only those hatched from a Heritage egg which is sired by a Heritage Breed chicken (1).
