So you have decided to buy some chickens. Well here are a few things to watch out for while you are shopping around. Buying chickens via mail order is not a very good way to get chickens. It is best to purchase them from a reputable store where the chicks can be viewed or from small flock owners. You should be aware and keep your eyes open for soiled bedding, dirty water & contaminated Feed when purchasing, and selecting a Chicken and it helps to know a little bit about these things before you start looking for chickens to buy.
Baby chicks and adult chickens which are exposed to soiled bedding, dirty water and contaminated feed are more likely to get sick and acquire bacterial infections.
Whether you are selecting baby chicks or full-grown chickens for your flock be aware of how they are being taken care of. If possible arrive unannounced so the owners do not have time to clean up after them before you get there. If the bedding is fairly clean without a lot of manure build up, the chicks do not show signs of illness, feed and water are adequately supplied clean with no indication of contamination, mildew, or bad smells then the chicken you choose will have a better start in life and less chances for illness that could spread to your entire flock.
