Vaccinations Against Fowl Pox
It is vitally important that you protect your chickens from getting fowl pox by vaccinating them because at this time there is no known cure for fowl pox. Once your birds get it, this viral infection can run through your whole flock.
What is fowl pox?
Fowl Pox is a viral infection that causes scabby lesions of unfeathered body parts, membranes, and in the lining of the mouth or air passages of poultry and other birds.
Treatment for Fowl Pox
There are no known treatments for fowl pox. However, it is highly recommended that you include a fowl pox vaccination in your flocks health maintanence program.
Age chickens should be given fowl pox vaccine
Chickens should be vaccinated at 12-16 weeks of age.
How to Administer Fowl Pox Vaccine
All chickens in your flock should be vaccinated for fowl pox or pigeon pox using the wing web method.
After Fowl Pox Vaccination Care
Vaccinated birds should be observed and examined daily for 7-10 days after inoculation.
How to tell if the Vaccine is working
There will be a swelling of the skin or a scab by the inoculation site which is called a take. If the vaccine was stored improperly, administered improperly, used after the expiration date, or given to a bird immune to fowl pox there will be no swelling or scab at the inoculation site.
Precautions
The fowl pox vaccine is a live virus which will give the birds a mild form of the disease so they can build an immunity against it.
