Your chickens cannot drink frozen water and your chickens water containers can become damaged if water freezes in them which will cost you money to replace them. There are many types of poultry water heater's and deicer's but which one you need depends on what type of watering system you have set up. Using a heated base on a plastic water container can cause a fire hazard. If you have or purchase a heated base it is a good idea to also get an aluminum or galvanized waterer to reduce the risk of fire. There are other options, such as deicer's, hose warmers, and water warmer's which work well or if you have heat in your hen house/chicken coop (and you should) you can keep their water in the hen house.
