Poultry leg bands can help you keep track of and identify your chickens but can also cause leg injuries if not inspected regularly, particularly in young growing birds. Leg bands can be used to keep track of information about your birds, or to help you tell the difference between your birds of the same breed. When putting leg bands on your chickens make sure they are not so tight that they cut off blood circulation and not so loose that they can be removed easily while scratching. Be sure to check the leg bands every day to make sure they are not damaged or outgrown and inspect for any redness or discoloration under the band. If there is any signs of irritation, infection, bacteria or if the bird has outgrown the band it should be removed immediately.
Warning!
If you use leg bands on baby chicks or other growing birds the leg bands can quickly become embedded in the birds leg and cause infection and even loss of the foot. Be sure to check leg bands daily.
