List of things that chickens commonly do, such as taking dirt baths, relationships with other chickens, tricks they do, crowing, disappearing, peck for food, establishing a pecking order, personality traits, mating, crowing and more. However, chickens also have other things they can do if you take the time to teach them.
Things chickens commonly do:
Scratch the ground looking for insects and bits of food
Take dust baths
Analyze things
Remember things
Talk to each other and you
Love treats
Come running when they see you
Mate with each other
Molt
Clean their feathers (preening)
Learn tricks if you teach them
Hens lay eggs, roosters do not
Have cognitive abilities
Put themselves in their chicken coop each night
Hens sometimes disappear to hatch a hidden brood of eggs
Hens act protective and crazy when they go broody
Roosters are protective over hens
Roosters will feed treats to their hens
Some chickens snuggle with their owners
Roosters have an internal time clock that tells them to crow at the break of dawn.
Chickens do many things which are ingrained in their natural behaviors. They do not have to learn from another chicken to crow, take a dirt bath, hatch an egg, peck for food, establish a pecking order or get on a high roost at night. However, chickens are also very intelligent and can learn to communicate with each other, with you, do tricks, and play games. There's no doubt about it, chickens are very interesting and entertaining. See Featured Video Below.
