Appenzeller Spitzhauben: Chicken Breed Information
Appenzeller Spitzbauben (show bird chicken) origin, egg color, color, size, pictures, plus watch our Featured Video: Appenzeller Spitzhauben silber-schwarzgetupft, Exposition Cantonale Grangeneuve 2013.
There are two most common breeds of the Appenzeller. The Appenzeller Spitzhauben (means pointed hood-a frilly hat worn by women in Switzerland in the Appenzell region) and The Appenzeller Barthubner (meaning bearded hen) which has no crest and a rose comb. These ornate and active birds are most often kept as show breeds and are a recognized breed from the American Poultry Association and several other breed registries with the exception of the UK which does not acknowledge this breed at this time. These beautiful hens are quite good egg layers. Appenzellers do well in a free range environment and do not do well as caged birds in tightly confined areas.
