Dubbing roosters and hens for health reasons Some people dub their roosters and hens to prevent bacterial infections, to remove frostbitten combs, wattles, and earlobes in an effort to prevent the frostbitten parts from spreading and developing bacterial infections. Some people trim only the comb, if it is too large and obstructing their birds eyesight. Is dubbing a chicken's comb painful to the birds? The process of dubbing does not appear to be painful to the birds if done correctly but there is a considerable amount of bleeding during the process.
