The Weekly Crow
Chicken blinders are most commonly used to stop chickens from pecking at each other, to prevent birds from stressing during poultry shows and when being butchered. Many people who have used them say that they work, however, the bird cannot see straight ahead, they can only see from the side which causes them to walk differently. Some folks say they use them when introducing new birds to a flock by blinding the dominate older birds. I have even seen folks who blind their roosters to prevent them from fighting one another.
Is it right to use Chicken blinds? (Scroll down to comment and vote). Chicken blinds (also known as chicken sunglasses) have typically been used to keep chickens from stressing during poultry showings, to stop chicken cannibalism, and to keep cocks from fighting one another.
Studies about blinding chickens results
Studies are being conducted to find out whether blind chickens undergo less stress during poultry and egg production no matter whether using blinders on your chickens or using genetically altered chickens which are blind for poultry and egg production the results somewhat assuring but still remains the thought is blinding chickens a humane form of treatment?According to Paul B. Thompson there are several benefits to blinding chickens used in intensive poultry production with the biggest problem being public awareness and perceptions about blinding chickens.
Benefits of Blinding Chickens
Theoretically speaking blinding chickens reduces their sensory capacity, eliminates their natural behavioral drives and species typical behavior.
Negatives of Blinding Chickens
Public reactions to blinding chickens and thereby hindering their natural instincts is sited as the only negative.
Chickens Born Blind
Certain strains of chickens are born blind due to an accident and it has been suggested that these blind chickens would stress less during crowded confinement
Older model blinders for chickens had a pin that would hold the blinders in place on the chickens face. Now clip on blinders are also available.
Is it humane to use blind chickens?
This article is very informative but there is a few problems that have been obviously overlooked. Simply blinding chickens that are about to be butchered may in fact eliminate many of their natural instincts but also reduces their quality of life not to mention the fact that there is no indication that blinding soon to be butchered chickens is any less painful for the chickens involved in the killing process. Simply covering the chickens eyes or using blind chickens may reduce the stress but does nothing to relieve the pain. -

Rev. Penny Dean
I am presently researching the use of blind chickens and the use of blinders on chickens used in commercial poultry and egg production and would appreciate your input.
