Homeowners confront City Council in Irmo, S.C.
The fight to own & raise backyard chickens continues all over the world
The fight continues all over the world including Irmo, S.C. to allow homeowners the opportunity to raise their own chickens. Most city ordinances, allow 250 lb pot bellied pigs but do not allow a 3 lb chicken.
"The recent trend to own backyard chickens is a continued fight as people confront city council members in cities all over the world. In "Irmo leaders are in a fine-feathered dilemma on allowing homeowners to raise chickens."
Town Council agreed to consider the idea Tuesday but Mayor John Gibbons warned supporters against “false hope” that the proposal will be approved.
Current restrictions do not allow the birds in all neighborhoods
"Development restrictions appear to ban the birds in several neighborhoods no matter what Town Hall does," stated council members.
Benefits of allowing homeowners to raise their own chickens were cited as:
Connection to farming
Compost for gardens
"Letting homeowners keep chickens gives families a connection to farming as well as providing eggs for meals and compost for gardens, Smith said.
Chickens are "no worse than dogs" according to homeowner Josh Smith, "We're going to keep trying"
