Healthy chickens should be vaccinated at 8 weeks or older or 4 weeks before they start to lay eggs. The fowl pox vaccination, if used as directed will prevent signs of the virulent field strains of the fowl pox virus. The fowl pox vaccine is a chicken embryo propagated, freeze dried virus. This type of vaccine should be administered by the wing web method (See How to Administer a Wing Web Vaccination). Hold the bird, spread the underside of the wing outward, insert the needle applicator into the vaccine bottle to wet or charge both needles. Then pierce the web of the underside of the exposed wing with the double needle vaccine charged applicator. Dip again and proceed to the next bird. Be sure that you do not inject any other area except the wing web, be careful not to hit large blood vessels, bones, or wing muscles with the double needle applicator. It is not advisable to vaccinate for 21 days prior to slaughter or less than 4 weeks before hens start laying eggs. All birds in a contaminated area should be vaccinated at the same time and moved immediately to an uncontaminated area. Infected birds should be placed in strict isolation and separate care takers should be employed to take care of unvaccinated and uncontaminated birds (Valley Vet, 2017).
