This method is being widely used even as we speak. Sadly, in most cases of those who have switched to cage free, the hens are far from free and only slightly better off than they were in the battery hen cages. They are kept in extremely overcrowded conditions where they are exposed to toxic fumes from their own feces. Movement, is now possible and there is usually a door to the outdoors but few hens can actually find it due to the overcrowding.

Though the hens are not confined to a tiny cage, they can now move around a bit but that is really the only positive thing that can be said for this new cafe free system of egg production. This is hardly the image that the label cage free eggs brings to the average consumer's mind and this is hardly what we would call a healthy environment for the hens much less for the eggs that they produce.
