We decided to sprout wheat seeds for fodder ourselves so we could show you how easy and quickly they sprout. Sprouting seeds can increase the nutrient value of your feed and reduce your feed bill, not to mention your chickens, birds, rabbits, and livestock will love to have delicious fresh greens year round. How to sprout wheat seeds

1. Cover them with water and let sit for 24 hours
2. Drain and spread them out in a tray
3. Water once or twice a day (keep them moist) mist if needed
4. Watch them grow
5. Cut in the size pieces you need with a sharp knife or box cutter

It takes 4-7 days for wheat seeds to sprout according to what I have read during my research. Scroll down to view the slideshow which will be updated once every day until the sprouts are 4 inches tall to show our current progress. 

We found untreated, non GMO wheat seeds, then soaked them in water for 24 hours to activate the growth process. Our hens were extremely interested in the process, so we threw them a few wheat seeds and they like them already-can't wait to see the look on their faces when they get their wheat sprouts!

Since we are experimenting to see how well sprouting wheat seed for fodder works, I decided to try something a little bit different and used a regular flower pot. I cut some old window screen I had lying around in the storage area and put it in the bottom of the pot so my seeds would not fall out of the drainage hole. Just for the sake of trying something different I also put screen in a pretty wine glass. I put the wheat seeds we soaked for 24 hours in these two container's. See the slideshow below.

I have been only misting the wheat seeds rather than drenching them in water. I am misting them 5 to 6 times a day in an effort to conserve water since we are in near drought conditions down here in Texas. These photo did not turn out so good as I took them in the evening because I was out building a new pen for the girls most the day. Had Sugar baby watching me mist in the morning and Nugget watching me try to take pictures at night...they are so anxious to eat my harvest..smile.
